Common Dental Cosmetic Issues
The following includes the most common cosmetic dental problems that dentists treat:
Tooth stains and discolouration:
Teeth whitening is by far the most common cosmetic dental treatment that people seek to brighten their smile. Staining of teeth can happen for a number of reasons, smoking being at the top of the list. Food colouring, coffee and tea also attribute to staining of the teeth. Buildup of hard deposit can make the teeth looked stained, when in fact all they need is a good clean to remove excess hard deposit around the teeth. Filling themselves can also pick up stain particularly around the margins, where the tooth and filling meet.
Teeth spaces:
Gaps or missing teeth can sometimes make areas of the mouth appear dark. Replacing teeth into the areas where teeth have not formed or have had early loss due to extraction can help enhance the smile line. This can be carried out with bridges, implant supported crowns or bridges or partial dentures.
Misaligned teeth in a malposition:
This can throw shadows onto other teeth in the mouth, making them look like they are discoloured or stained. There is difficulty in the long term in keeping these clean and the issue you may currently have may worsen with age. Therefore, the malalignment should be rectified with orthodontics, utilising a clear aligner technique or Damon or traditional braces.
Chipped, damaged or broken teeth:
In cases where we have chipped broken or damaged teeth, these areas are hard to clean. They pick up stain and can be unsightly in some cases. Filling these areas with conventional filling materials, or for a more permanent cosmetic result, consideration of crowns, veneers or bridges may be required. This would be discussed and determined at the time of your initial visit when addressing your concerns.
Dentures:
Patients who are wearing full denture, find it difficult to chew foods comfortably.
For these patients, who can go down the path of replacing the dentures with fixed bridges, can have this carried out, by having implants placed into the arch and having a fixed prosthesis attached to the implants. This gives the patient more confidence when eating and smiling, because there is no fear of the prosthesis dropping.
